Barramundi are increasingly farmed in recirculating aquaculture systems globally, raising welfare questions around stocking density, water quality, and slaughter practices.
Barramundi production has expanded rapidly in RAS facilities in Australia, Southeast Asia, and North America, offering potential environmental advantages over open-net pen farming. However, the welfare picture is complex. Barramundi are highly territorial and aggressive — intensive stocking triggers stress hormones, fin damage, and injury from conspecific attacks. Grading operations, which sort fish by size, involve handling and crowding that produce acute stress responses. The dominant slaughter method — live chilling in ice slurry — is now considered inhumane by most fish welfare scientists, as barramundi can remain conscious for 9-14 minutes at cold temperatures. Percussive stunning followed by immediate spiking (ikejime) or electrical stunning are increasingly adopted by welfare-conscious producers.
