Because smell is the primary way dogs perceive their world, olfactory enrichment engages dogs at a deep cognitive level unavailable through visual or physical exercise alone. Research on shelter dogs has shown that scent enrichment reduces stress indicators including cortisol levels and stereotypic behaviors more effectively than other common enrichment types. Practical applications include scatter feeding in grass or substrate (rather than from a bowl), snuffle mats, hidden treat searches, and formal nose work training.
