Stocking density is the most tractable welfare variable in aquaculture — it directly determines the degree to which individual fish can express normal behavior, access resources, and avoid physiological stress. At high densities, fish show the full cascade of chronic stress responses: elevated cortisol disrupts immunity, leading to increased disease incidence and antibiotic use; subordinate fish are driven from food access points, causing uneven growth and nutritional deficiency; fin damage from aggressive interactions increases with density. The welfare evidence for reducing stocking density is stronger than for almost any other aquaculture intervention, yet commercial pressure to maximize throughput keeps densities high. Consumer and regulatory pressure has been the primary driver of density improvements where they have occurred. Welfare certification schemes that include maximum density thresholds significantly below legal limits represent an important lever.
