Breed-related inherited disease represents a systemic welfare failure embedded in dog breeding practices and consumer demand. The case of brachycephalic dogs is particularly stark: breeds defined by extreme skull flattening have been selected to a point where normal breathing, sleeping without obstructed airway, and exercising in warm weather are impossible without surgical intervention. Animals that cannot breathe normally without corrective surgery should not be bred as such. Similarly, breeds where painful conditions like syringomyelia occur in virtually every individual represent an ongoing welfare emergency. Reform requires action at multiple levels: kennel club breed standard revision, veterinarian refusal to perform cosmetic procedures that perpetuate problematic traits, responsible breeding certification programs, and consumer education that reframes perceived cuteness as documented suffering.
