Polar bear welfare represents one of the strongest cases in the zoo world for questioning whether certain species should be kept in captivity at all. The scientific evidence is unusually clear: the vast majority of zoo polar bears develop stereotypic pacing behaviors that are essentially impossible to eliminate, even with the best enrichment programs and largest enclosures that zoos can provide. These behaviors reflect a fundamental mismatch between the species behavioral needs — covering vast Arctic territories while hunting highly mobile prey — and what any zoo can offer. The Detroit Zoo made the welfare-based decision to transfer its polar bears to an Arctic sanctuary, acknowledging that their needs could not be adequately met. As the wild population faces existential threat from climate change, the conservation justification for zoo keeping is also weakened. Habitat conservation funding may provide more welfare benefit than captive exhibition.
