Welfare Considerations

The shift from welfare as absence of suffering to welfare as presence of positive experience represents a significant evolution in animal welfare science. Traditional welfare assessment focused on the Five Freedoms — preventing pain, disease, fear, distress, and behavioral restriction. The Five Domains framework adds a fifth domain of positive mental experience, recognizing that welfare means not just avoiding negative states but experiencing positive ones including pleasure, comfort, engagement, and anticipation. Practical positive welfare indicators for farms include play behavior frequency, voluntary human approach (indicating positive human-animal relationship), exploratory behavior at enrichment items, and positive social grooming. Farms that score well on positive indicators tend also to have lower disease rates and better production metrics — a convergence that makes positive welfare assessment attractive to economically motivated producers.
