Pig group housing represents one of the clearest welfare improvements available in commercial swine production, but design and management matter enormously. Pigs in well-designed group housing with stable social groups, adequate space, and environmental enrichment show behavioral profiles far closer to wild counterparts than sows in gestation stalls. Social play, mutual grooming, and affiliative resting contact — behaviors essentially absent in stall systems — are expressed regularly in good group housing. The critical design factors include space allowance per animal, feeding system design (ensuring subordinate pigs can access food without constant displacement), stable group composition from weaning to slaughter where possible, and enrichment that provides outlets for rooting, exploration, and manipulation. The transition from stall to group housing has been completed successfully by many producers with careful management, refuting claims that welfare improvement requires unacceptable production losses.
