Hamsters are popular small pets whose welfare needs — particularly for exercise and burrowing — are systematically undermet by typical pet store cages and common care advice.
Hamster welfare is one of the most consistently poor cases in companion animal keeping — the combination of tiny commercial cages, inadequate wheels, and minimal substrate depth creates chronic suffering for millions of animals globally. Research at the University of Bern demonstrated that hamsters in inadequately sized cages show behavioral indicators of anxiety including stereotypic bar-biting and hyperactivity that disappear when appropriately large housing is provided. The minimum care standards marketed in pet stores are dramatically below what research supports: standard commercial cages are often 40x25 cm when 100x50 cm is the research-supported minimum. Wheel diameter matters enormously for back health — running with a curved spine on a small wheel causes injury. European countries including Germany and Austria have adopted research-based minimum care standards that are far more demanding than typical pet store recommendations.
