Enriched colony cages occupy a contested middle ground in hen welfare. They represent a genuine improvement over conventional battery cages — nest boxes reduce frustration during egg-laying, perches allow expression of a strong behavioral preference, and scratch areas provide limited foraging opportunity. However, the space available per hen (750 square centimeters) still prevents wing-flapping and meaningful movement. The welfare comparison with cage-free systems is nuanced: cage-free aviaries allow far more natural behavior but have higher keel bone fracture rates from perch falls, more disease transmission in larger groups, and management challenges that can produce welfare failures in poorly run operations. The welfare science suggests that well-managed cage-free or free-range systems are superior overall, but management quality matters as much as system type.
