Channel catfish and pangasius are among the most widely farmed catfish species, with welfare considerations around pond water quality, crowding, and harvest practices at significant scale.
Farmed catfish welfare research is less developed than for salmonids, reflecting the lower market value and regulatory attention the industry receives. Channel catfish in pond aquaculture are generally at lower stocking densities than salmon or tilapia, which reduces chronic stress from crowding. However, harvest practices concentrate fish in deteriorating conditions before slaughter — seining in earthen ponds raises turbidity, temperature, and ammonia as fish crowd together. Live transport to processing facilities exposes catfish to water quality stress that continues through the preslaughter period. Pangasius farming in Vietnam has expanded rapidly with environmental and welfare standards varying enormously across producers — the Aquaculture Stewardship Council certification provides some quality assurance but uptake is incomplete. Welfare science for catfish is an area where more research is needed to establish species-specific standards.
