But the research community is tiny relative to the scale of the problem: billions of animals, countless production systems, and thousands of welfare questions that need rigorous evidence. Open Philanthropy, a major funder of effective altruism causes, has identified farmed animal welfare as a priority area and significantly increased research funding in the past decade. Academic institutions that train welfare scientists and support research careers are essential infrastructure for long-term progress.
