Black soldier fly (BSF) welfare sits at the most uncertain end of insect welfare considerations. Unlike bees or cockroaches that show complex learning and behavioral responses to noxious stimuli, BSF larvae have more rudimentary nervous systems and limited behavioral complexity. The scientific consensus places BSF among the least likely insect species to have morally significant welfare interests, though certainty remains low. Practically, this translates to less pressing welfare concern than for socially complex insects, but not to zero concern given the extraordinary numbers farmed.
