Despite their small size, quail have complex behavioral needs that are rarely met in commercial production. The provision of loose substrate like sand or peat for dust bathing, perches at appropriate heights, and foraging materials significantly improves welfare outcomes. Quail are also sensitive to light — appropriate photoperiods reduce stress. Group size management is important as quail can be aggressive, particularly males. Welfare-conscious producers are beginning to adopt enriched colony systems modeled on improved broiler and layer hen standards.
