Resource guarding is a normal canine behavior that can create safety concerns in homes. Understanding and managing it through positive methods improves welfare for dogs and their families.
Resource guarding often reflects anxiety or past experiences of having valued items taken away. Dogs who guard may do so because they have learned that humans approaching means loss of something valuable. The welfare-conscious approach treats guarding as communication rather than defiance, addressing the underlying emotional state rather than suppressing the behavior. Structured training programs using counter-conditioning — teaching the dog that approach predicts something better, not loss — are highly effective. Management strategies, including feeding in separate areas and avoiding triggers, protect both the dog and household members while training progresses.
