As active, schooling fish accustomed to wide-ranging movement, confinement in high-density systems may restrict natural behavior. The welfare priority areas include maintaining appropriate dissolved oxygen levels, minimizing unnecessary handling, using pre-slaughter stunning, and reducing crowding duration during harvest. RAS systems offer better control over water quality but require consistent monitoring. Consumer demand for responsibly produced seafood is encouraging more producers to adopt welfare-conscious practices.
