Wolverines are elusive, wide-ranging mustelids with large home range requirements that make captive welfare particularly challenging. Their conservation needs and captive welfare intersect in complex ways.
Wolverine welfare in captivity is exceptionally challenging. Animals adapted to roam hundreds of kilometers cannot have their natural behavioral needs met in standard zoo enclosures. Stereotypic pacing is common in captive wolverines, reflecting frustration of movement drives. Providing complex terrain, buried food caches, and varied environmental challenges can partially address behavioral needs, but the fundamental constraint of space cannot be overcome in typical zoo settings. The conservation case for captive wolverines is limited since populations are not immediately threatened globally. In-situ conservation focusing on climate policy, habitat protection, and trapping reduction is more impactful for wolverine welfare and survival.
