Barramundi welfare challenges center on aggression management and stress from intensive production. As predatory fish, they show higher rates of aggression and cannibalism than schooling species, requiring careful size-grading to minimize injuries. High stocking densities in cage systems restrict swimming space and increase fin damage from aggressive encounters. Water temperature management is critical — barramundi prefer 26-30C and experience stress outside this range. Pre-slaughter handling and slaughter method welfare standards are underdeveloped for this species. As barramundi farming expands in North America, Australia, and Southeast Asia, developing species-specific welfare standards becomes increasingly important.
