Dehorning without pain relief is one of the most widespread sources of preventable pain in livestock production. Research consistently demonstrates significant acute pain responses during the procedure and post-procedure behavioral changes including head shaking, reduced feeding, and abnormal postures that indicate ongoing discomfort. Yet surveys show that many producers still do not routinely use analgesia due to cost, time constraints, and lack of veterinary requirement. The longer-term solution — genetic polling — is gaining traction as polled bulls are increasingly available across beef and dairy breeds. Transitioning entire industries toward naturally hornless cattle would eliminate millions of painful procedures annually.
