Wildlife monitoring technology advances are shifting the welfare equation for scientific study of wild animals. Every capture-and-release for tagging or sampling carries welfare costs: capture stress, handling, potential injury, and disruption of ongoing behaviors. Non-invasive alternatives that provide comparable data eliminate these welfare costs. Drone population counts have welfare advantages over helicopter surveys for disturbing stress responses; eDNA species detection eliminates the need for trapping; acoustic monitoring identifies species presence without contact. Where invasive monitoring remains necessary for high-value data unavailable otherwise, Three Rs principles applied to wildlife research minimize welfare costs per unit of scientific information. The welfare-optimal research design is the one that obtains needed information with the least harm to the animals studied.
