Pangasius welfare challenges stem from the same hardiness that made them attractive for intensive farming: their tolerance of poor conditions has historically enabled producers to maintain high densities with fewer immediate mortalities than more sensitive species. But stress, crowding, and poor water quality cause chronic welfare harm even when fish survive. Research documents elevated stress hormones, fin and body damage, and behavioral indicators of poor welfare in intensive pangasius systems. Pre-slaughter handling and slaughter practices — typically including prolonged air exposure and ice immersion without stunning — cause unnecessary suffering. Consumer demand for welfare-conscious certification creates incentives for improvement.
