Reptiles are among the most misunderstood companion animals. Their complex thermal, dietary, and behavioral needs are frequently unmet, causing significant and often invisible suffering.
Reptile welfare suffers from two interconnected problems: inadequate keeper knowledge and inadequate housing equipment. A bearded dragon requires a basking spot above 40C, a UVB lamp of appropriate strength, a varied insect and vegetable diet, and a large enough enclosure to thermoregulate across a temperature gradient. Most beginner setups fail on multiple counts. Metabolic bone disease from inadequate calcium and UVB is epidemic in captive reptiles. The behavioral signals of pain and illness in reptiles — reduced activity, abnormal posture, hiding — are subtle and easily missed or attributed to normal behavior. Improving reptile welfare requires better point-of-sale information, species-appropriate minimum housing standards, and owner education.
