The indoor/outdoor debate in cat welfare has no universal answer. A cat that has always lived indoors with adequate enrichment may be perfectly content, while a cat that has lived outdoors may suffer significantly from restriction. The risks of outdoor access are real and significant — shorter average lifespans reflect genuine mortality causes. The compromise of a secure outdoor enclosure (catio) provides environmental complexity, fresh air, bird watching, and weather exposure without predation and traffic risks.
