Finches and canaries are among the most popular small cage birds, but their welfare needs are frequently unmet. Understanding their social and behavioral requirements helps improve lives for millions of kept birds.
Finch and canary welfare is compromised primarily by inadequate housing and diet. The small round cages commonly sold for these birds prevent flight, a fundamental biological need. Adequate housing provides sufficient length for multiple wing-strokes of flight, perches at varying heights and diameters, and visual complexity. Diet is critical: all-seed diets are nutritionally incomplete and cause obesity and vitamin A deficiency — a varied diet including greens, eggs, and fortified foods prevents these conditions. Social housing is essential for finches (canaries are more variable in social preference). Many welfare problems in small cage birds go undetected because their stoic nature means illness signs are subtle until disease is advanced.
