Companion pig welfare is compromised by two interconnected failures: dishonest marketing of "miniature" breeds and inadequate owner preparation for the realities of pig ownership. Pigs bought as teacup or micro pets frequently grow to 50+ kg — and the original promise of a small apartment pet cannot be fulfilled. A pig confined to a small indoor space without rooting access, social companions, or behavioral outlets suffers significantly from frustration of its most basic behavioral drives. Local regulations often prohibit pigs within city limits, making many companion pig situations legally precarious. Prospective owners must research honestly, plan for a full-sized potbellied pig, and ensure they can provide the outdoor space, social companionship, and legal context required.
