Dairy cow longevity welfare involves recognizing that short productive lives mean that welfare costs including the transition period, first calving, and early lactation are experienced proportionally more often per unit of lifetime. A cow producing 10 lactations amortizes these welfare costs across a much longer productive life than a cow culled after 2-3 lactations. Extending productive life requires addressing the root causes of premature culling: mastitis prevention through hygiene and management, lameness prevention through foot care and housing, and reproductive management that maintains fertility.
