Dogs suffering from brachycephalic syndrome breathe with chronic effort, sleep poorly, and are always at risk of respiratory crisis. Syringomyelia causes relentless pain. These are not acceptable outcomes of responsible breeding. Reform requires both regulatory action on breed standards and a fundamental shift in consumer purchasing behavior.
