Welfare Considerations

Drill welfare in captivity is complicated by both small population size and limited understanding of their behavioral ecology. Like other large primates, drills in inadequate social or environmental conditions develop behavioral abnormalities including self-harm. Their conservation importance must not be used to justify inadequate welfare standards — both goals must be pursued simultaneously.
