Cetacean research ethics requires honest assessment of welfare impact against scientific benefit. Biopsy sampling causes brief discomfort but generates information about population genetics, toxicology, and health that can directly inform conservation. Military sonar testing is at the opposite end of the spectrum: large-scale acoustic disturbance that causes behavioral disruption and potentially stranding in military training exercises represents welfare harm without scientific benefit proportionate to the impact.
