Accurate pain assessment in livestock has historically been difficult, but new tools including grimace scales and behavioral scoring are transforming veterinary and farm practice.
Until recently, pain in livestock was often underestimated or ignored because behavioral signs were subtle or misinterpreted as normal production variation. Grimace scales provide a standardized, observer-independent method for detecting acute pain. Validated scales exist for cattle (Cattle Pain Scale), sheep (Sheep Grimace Scale), pigs, and goats. Integration of these tools into routine farm practice and veterinary training allows timely pain relief. Wearable sensor technology is advancing automated pain detection — accelerometers and ear tags can detect changes in behavior patterns associated with pain and alert farmers before animals deteriorate significantly.
