Beyond preventing suffering, fish welfare science is increasingly focused on identifying and promoting positive welfare states in aquaculture settings.
Fish welfare science has historically focused on preventing harm — reducing crowding, improving water quality, minimizing handling. A complementary positive welfare framework asks: what conditions allow fish to experience good lives? Behavioral indicators including robust foraging, exploration, social cohesion, and preference for enriched environments are now being developed as positive welfare measures. Tank enrichment (current flow, shelter objects, substrate variation) benefits fish welfare not only by reducing stress but by enabling expression of natural behavioral repertoires. The welfare case for investing in fish positive welfare is compelling given the enormous scale of aquaculture — even small improvements per individual aggregate to enormous welfare gains at population scale.
