Separation anxiety causes genuine suffering. Dogs with separation anxiety are not misbehaving out of spite — they are experiencing a panic response. Physiological measures (heart rate, cortisol, video behavior analysis) confirm the distress is real and significant. Treatment requires patience and systematic work: graduated desensitization to departure cues, building tolerance to alone time in tiny increments, and often fluoxetine to reduce the anxiety threshold sufficiently for behavioral learning to occur. Video monitoring during absences is essential to guide treatment progression. Environmental modifications — food puzzles during absence, calming music, confined safe spaces — complement the core treatment. Punishment-based approaches are contraindicated and harmful.
