Welfare Considerations

Hippo welfare in zoos is fundamentally about water provision. Without constant access to deep water, hippos cannot thermoregulate, cannot protect their sensitive skin, cannot engage in natural social behavior, and are at elevated risk of skin disease. Pools should be large enough for submersion, maintained at appropriate temperature, and filterable given hippo waste output. Social housing of compatible individuals — typically one male with females — reflects natural social organization. Feeding must account for their large food requirements and their preference for grazing. Hippos are among the larger behavioral challenges in zoo management; their territorial and aggressive tendencies make management of incompatible individuals an important welfare consideration.
