Farmed Animal Welfare

Farmed Animal Positive Emotions and Welfare Science

The science of positive emotions in farmed animals is transforming welfare assessment from a purely negative framework to one that also actively promotes good experiences.

Welfare Considerations

The shift toward positive welfare science represents a fundamental advance in how we understand and assess animal welfare. Traditional welfare assessment focused exclusively on preventing the Five Freedoms violations — freedom from hunger, pain, disease, discomfort, and behavioral restriction. The Five Domains model and similar frameworks extend this to explicitly require the promotion of positive mental states. Validated measures of positive emotional state in farm animals (judgment bias tests, approach-avoidance measures, play frequency) are now being incorporated into progressive welfare standards. This matters practically: enriched, socially housed animals in positive emotional states show measurably better health and productivity outcomes — making positive welfare both ethically compelling and commercially rational.
