An honest assessment of global animal welfare progress shows significant advances alongside persistent challenges; understanding both is essential for effective advocacy.
Global animal welfare progress is real but uneven. The EU battery cage ban represents welfare improvement for hundreds of millions of animals annually. Corporate commitments from major food companies to cage-free eggs and Better Chicken practices cover billions of animals. Growing public awareness and legal recognition of sentience create an improving landscape. But significant challenges persist: the total number of animals in welfare-compromising conditions continues to grow as production volumes increase, often faster than welfare standards improve. The scale of aquatic animal welfare — tens to hundreds of billions of individuals — remains largely unaddressed by regulation or corporate policy. Progress in wealthy countries is not automatically replicated in rapidly industrializing regions where most production growth is occurring. Effective advocacy must address both improving conditions per animal and reducing the total number of animals in poor conditions.
