Protected contact management — where keepers work with elephants separated by barriers rather than in free contact — improves keeper safety and allows elephants to refuse participation without compulsion. Positive reinforcement-based training for voluntary participation in foot care, blood draws, and reproductive examinations reduces the need for chemical restraint. Exhibit space continues to expand with each facility renovation; multiple acres of varied terrain with soft substrate, water features, and browse are now considered minimum for responsible programs. Some facilities have concluded that elephants cannot be adequately kept and have phased out their programs — an honest welfare assessment that other institutions should be willing to make.
