Leash reactivity in dogs causes distress for both dogs and owners; understanding the fear and frustration basis of reactive behavior enables compassionate, effective management.
Reactive dogs suffer significantly — every walk becomes a stress event as they anticipate and respond to triggers with intense arousal. Owners often misread the behavior as aggression rather than fear or frustration, leading to inappropriate responses including punishment that escalates the problem. The underlying emotional state drives the behavior: changing the emotional response (through counterconditioning) resolves the behavioral expression more reliably than suppressing the behavior through punishment. Management during treatment — avoiding triggers, using visual barriers, increasing distance — prevents practice of the reactive behavior while treatment progresses. Behavioral medication can lower the threshold sufficiently to allow counterconditioning to work when reactivity is severe. Most reactive dogs improve significantly with appropriate treatment.
