Farmed salmon welfare certification has matured substantially over the past decade. RSPCA Assured provides the most comprehensive welfare-specific certification, covering stocking density, water quality, handling, transport, and slaughter. ASC certification is better known but primarily sustainability-focused; its welfare provisions are evolving toward greater specificity. Norwegian regulatory frameworks set clear operational welfare limits backed by inspection and enforcement — making Norway the de facto global standard setter for salmon welfare regulation. The welfare improvements driven by certification in the UK and Scandinavia are measurable: lower lice burdens, better wound scores, and improved slaughter practices. Consumer recognition of welfare labels is growing, creating market incentives for producers to seek higher certifications.
