Zebrafish are the most widely used fish in biomedical research, and growing evidence of their sentience is driving improved welfare standards in research facilities worldwide.
Laboratory fish welfare has historically received less regulatory attention than mammalian models, partly due to uncertainty about fish sentience. Accumulating evidence of pain sensitivity and stress responses in zebrafish and other fish species argues for application of the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) principles. Environmental enrichment including substrate, plants, and social housing in appropriate group sizes significantly reduces stress indicators.
