Heat stress causes immediate suffering including panting, reduced activity, and altered physiology, as well as longer-term immune suppression and reproductive failure. The welfare burden of heat stress will grow substantially with climate change, making adaptation investment urgent. Cooling infrastructure including shade structures, forced ventilation, and evaporative cooling systems provide proven welfare protection. Transitioning to more heat-tolerant breeds and reduced livestock density also reduces heat stress risk.
