Hamsters are among the most commonly mistreated companion animals due to widespread misconceptions about their space and activity needs, making welfare education critical.
Hamster welfare is chronically underserved by both pet industry standards and consumer awareness. The vast majority of commercially available hamster enclosures are insufficient for the exercise needs of these highly active nocturnal animals. Providing large enclosures (minimum 100x50cm floor area), deep substrate for burrowing, solid-surface running wheels (minimum 28cm for Syrians), and hiding enrichment addresses the most critical welfare needs. Bar-chewing and repetitive running behaviors indicate welfare deficiency rather than contentment.
