Feedlot welfare involves a concentrated period of behavioral restriction following what may be a relatively free range period. The transition stress of commingling with unfamiliar cattle and adapting to high-concentrate diets causes significant health problems including respiratory disease and acidosis. From a behavioral perspective, cattle evolved to walk considerable distances foraging, and feedlot confinement limits this fundamental locomotor drive. The scale of feedlot production makes welfare improvements in this system numerically impactful. Progressive feedlot operators have demonstrated improvements in health outcomes through reduced stocking density, early disease detection, and environmental management.
