Tilapia welfare reform is gaining momentum as major retailers and certification bodies incorporate fish welfare standards into supplier requirements. Key welfare concerns include oxygen depletion during crowding, poor water quality from high ammonia concentrations, and inhumane slaughter without stunning. Welfare improvements are achievable with relatively low cost through stocking density management, water quality monitoring, and investment in pre-slaughter stunning equipment. Consumer and retailer pressure is driving faster adoption of these practices.
