Wild-caught reptile import welfare involves harms at every stage: capture trauma, holding conditions in source countries, air transport stress, and post-import adjustment challenges. For every reptile that survives to reach a consumer, multiple individuals may have died along the supply chain. Choosing captive-bred reptiles from reputable domestic breeders eliminates all of these welfare costs while also supporting sustainable captive breeding programs. The availability of captive-bred alternatives for most popular species means wild capture is increasingly difficult to justify on welfare or conservation grounds. CITES monitoring provides some protection but enforcement gaps allow significant welfare-compromising trade.
