Transitioning global food systems toward more sustainable protein sources offers the potential for massive simultaneous reductions in animal welfare harm and environmental impact.
The protein transition offers the largest potential welfare improvement for farmed animals of any available intervention. The scale of reduction in animal suffering achievable through widespread dietary shift toward plant-based foods, combined with development of cultivated meat alternatives, is difficult to overstate: billions of animals currently experiencing welfare compromise in intensive farming would simply not exist in significantly reduced farming systems. Individual dietary choices aggregate into market signals that drive production system change. Policy advocacy that supports subsidies for plant-based alternatives and honest pricing of animal products including welfare and environmental costs creates the conditions for systemic transition.
