Recognizing and treating pain in aging dogs to maintain quality of life through their senior years.
Pain in senior dogs is significantly underdiagnosed and undertreated because dogs evolved to hide vulnerability and because owners and veterinarians often attribute mobility changes to normal aging rather than painful conditions. Proactive pain assessment in dogs over seven years should include owner questionnaires, veterinary gait analysis, and orthopedic examination. Early intervention with appropriate analgesia, weight management, and physical therapy preserves quality of life and may extend the comfortable period of a dog life substantially.
