Tracking scientific and industry progress toward better broiler chicken welfare outcomes globally.
Broiler chicken welfare reform represents the largest opportunity for welfare improvement by numbers of individuals affected. The combination of genetic selection for rapid growth, high stocking density, and barren environments creates chronic welfare problems for the most numerous farmed vertebrate. Progress through corporate BCC commitments has moved the conversation from whether reform is possible to how quickly it will happen. The welfare community must maintain pressure on commitment fulfillment while developing the supply chains, auditing capacity, and consumer markets that make high-welfare broiler production commercially viable.
