Welfare Considerations

River dolphin welfare intersects acutely with conservation because these species have nowhere else to go — they are confined to river systems that are themselves under enormous human pressure from fishing, navigation, agriculture, and water extraction. The welfare of individual dolphins living in increasingly degraded, noise-polluted, entanglement-risk habitats is poor. Conservation actions that protect river sections, reduce fishing pressure, and restore habitat improve the welfare of individual animals as well as population viability. The extinction of the Yangtze river dolphin is a permanent welfare and conservation failure that should motivate urgency for remaining species.
