Welfare Considerations

Farmed quail welfare has received less regulatory and research attention than chicken welfare despite similar systemic welfare problems in intensive production. Quail in barren battery cages cannot dustbathe, nest, or express the foraging behavior their behavioral ecology requires, resulting in stereotypic behaviors and high cannibalism rates that necessitate further welfare-compromising beak trimming. Welfare-positive quail production systems provide substrate enrichment and appropriate stocking densities. The small body size of quail does not diminish the severity of behavioral deprivation experienced by individual birds in conventional systems.
