Companion reptile welfare fails at high rates because reptile needs are poorly understood by owners, inconsistently communicated at point of sale, and often inadequately met by commercially available equipment and diets. Reptiles experiencing poor thermoregulation, inadequate UVB, or inappropriate humidity exist in chronic physiological compromise that undermines immune function and behavioral health. The welfare solution requires better owner education before purchase, species-appropriate equipment standards, and discouragement of species whose needs cannot be realistically met in domestic settings.
