Shrimp have decentralized nervous systems, but evidence increasingly supports the capacity for pain-like experiences, making welfare considerations important. Optimal stocking densities that balance production efficiency with welfare remain an active area of research. The Shrimp Welfare Project and others are developing evidence-based welfare standards. Transitions to lower densities, improved water management, and regular welfare assessment during cultivation represent meaningful improvements.
